Jimi returned to the Bay Area for the first time in a year, performing two concerts at the Berkeley Community Theater. Although Hendrix had sold out the much larger Oakland Coliseum the previous April, promoter Bill Graham preferred a more intimate setting, a quaint theater situated within the hotbed of student anti-war protest.
The smaller venue posed security problems as frustrated fans struggled to enter the building amid hordes of would be patrons searching for tickets.
One of Jimi's most celebrated performances, highlights of his appearance at Berkeley can be seen in the 1971 film Jimi Plays Berkeley. While somewhat haphazardly filmed and edited, the film features unforgettable footage of "Johnny B. Goode", "Purple Haze", and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)". The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set features "Johnny B. Goode" as well as "Blue Suede Shoes", a track recorded at the afternoon rehearsal.
