Experience Hendrix acquired the tape from Melinda Merryweather, a friend of Jimi's who worked on the Rainbow Bridge film in Hawaii. During a meeting in May 1998, Merryweather explained that Jimi recorded "Scorpio Woman" during his August 1970 stay on the island of Maui. While filming for Rainbow Bridge involved a host of island locations, Jimi spent part of his time on Maui near the historic village of Lahaina. Merryweather vividly remembers Jimi relaxing, playing guitar, developing new ideas, and enjoying the beauty of Maui during his Lahaina stay.

Sadly, Jimi was never able to formally record "Scorpio Woman" at Electric Lady Studios or elsewhere.
